My 1-Ingredient Secret to Easier, Better Granola

How to Make Authentic Indian-Style Granola at Home | Easy Step-by-Step Guide

In India, granola is not as traditional as, say, a warm cup of chai or a plate of piping hot samosas. However, with the rise of health-conscious eaters and the increasing popularity of international cuisine, Indian households are now falling in love with the crunchy, nutty goodness of homemade granola. And, I’m excited to share with you my secret to making the most delicious, authentic Indian-style granola at home.

My Secret Ingredient for the Best Granola

In my house, weekends are for making granola. I LOVE adding a dash of spices to my granola, but my secret ingredient is… (drumroll, please)… nut butter! Yes, you read that right – nut butter! My go-to favourite is natural crunchy salted peanut butter, but you can experiment with almond butter, seed butters like tahini and sunflower butter, or even regular peanut butter. My Basic Granola Formula

Here’s my basic granola formula that yields a delicious and crunchy snack:

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 4 cups add-ins, such as dried shredded coconut, chopped or sliced nuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, wheat germ, etc.
  • 1 cup honey or maple syrup
  • ¼ cup nut butter
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil, coconut oil, or melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup dried fruit, such as raisins, chopped dates, chopped dried apricots, dried cranberries, etc. (Optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C) and lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Combine rolled oats and add-ins in a large bowl.
  3. In a 2-cup liquid measure, combine honey, nut butter, oil, and cinnamon. Heat in the microwave until loosened and warmed, about 1 minute. Mix thoroughly and pour over rolled-oat mixture. Toss to coat thoroughly.
  4. Pour granola onto the prepared baking sheet and spread into a shallow layer.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven, stirring every 5-10 minutes, until desired color is reached, about 15-25 minutes total. (Don’t let it burn! It will get crunchy as it cools.)
  6. Remove granola from the oven and let cool completely. Stir in dried fruit (if using).
  7. Store in a sealed container.
