What is the Eno Fruit Salt?
The Eno Fruit Salts are a brand of antacids manufactured by GSK (GlaxoSmithKline). They are one of the few brands of antacids suitable for diabetics as they (specifically the regular variant) do not contain any sugar. It should however be mentioned that Eno Fruit Salts are not suitable for people on low sodium diets. It is available in two flavors, Eno regular and Eno lemon.
The tag line of the Eno Fruit Salt is “Gets to work in 6 seconds” reflects the fast acting nature of this antacid. Fruit salts and antacids such as Eno are mainly used to provide relief from bloating, nausea, flatulence and indigestion caused by stomach acidity. The Eno Fruit Salt contains sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and citric acid. All three ingredients are safe for consumption in this form and commonly known. Citric acid is found in many fruits and in especially high concentrations in citrus fruits. Sodium bicarbonate is also known as baking soda and Eno Fruit Salts are often used as a replacement for it in cooking. Baking soda is known to be an effective antacid and is used as such medically. Sodium carbonate is commonly known as washing soda.
All three are approved for use by the US FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and EU FSA (Food Safety Authority). They are non toxic, non carcinogenic and are unlikely to cause any ill effects when taken as advised.
The Eno Fruit Salts are free of any colorants, gluten, lactose or preservative according to the manufacturer. However, it should be mentioned that citric acid is commonly used as a food preservative.
